‘At a certain point in illness care is the only thing we have. Care for those we love, care for ourselves.’ Roger Ebert, US film critic and screen writer.

‘To be vulnerable is to live.’ In Tales from the Cancer Ward renowned filmmaker Paul Cox celebrates the beauty and fragility of life. The unexpected message of illness that he is delivered leaves him feeling utterly alone and with no alternative but to confront his own mortality, to question the separation of the spirit and the body, and to navigate what is truly essential in this world.

As John Larkin writes in his introduction, Paul Cox’s story ‘demonstrates the resilience of the human body and spirit, the power of positive thought over fear, what is possible, even when the odds seem almost impossible, and the life-saving blessings of modern medicine.’

At times dark, at times intense, this is ultimately a book filled with light, and hope, and life. The return message that Cox has written to himself and his readers is a precious answer, a true homecoming.

Tales From The Cancer Ward eBook Paul Cox

While I read many books, it’s been awhile since one has touched me as deeply as ‘Tales from a Cancer ward’, by Paul Cox. Am not sure whether its that we are both Dutch so I recognize the history, his brute to blunt honesty that comes straight from the heart and soul, or whether it’s world as he sees it through the eyes of an artist an authentic being who can translate the world that he sees into words and images that we can all recognize and relate. He has also managed to stay true to himself and not sell out to the mainstream – it doesn’t really matter the reasons behind why I might have like or related so strongly to his tale, it’s the story of his experience with cancer and it comes up from the pages to stir ones soul and that spark of life which we all carry so deep within us, the book reflects life and living in all its nakedness, its poignant beauty and at times its incredibly raw pain. I am touched, saddened and yet stirred to appreciate life, love, beauty and the experience of it all so much more through the reading of this book – its one that I want to go and buy one for everyone I know. Deeply loved, highly recommended. And the last words from the book sum it ALL up “Life is Beautiful”.
